How To Prepare A Garden Without A Plow Or Tiller?

Posted on 07. Dec, 2009 by admin in Gardening Articles

My dad’s tiller is broken, and I want to surprise him by getting his garden ready for planting before father’s day. Is there any way to do so without a plow or tiller? As you can probably tell, I know nothing about this sort of thing. Thanks in advance!

if the area is too large to dig you can create a border around the area with boards or ? then line with a thick layer of grass clippings or whatever you have handy . Get a load of compost delivered enough to do a 4-6 inch layer if you can afford it I would do 6 inches of good loamy soil first then the compost this should kill any weeds and act like a raised bed.

Google “no till” gardening. It’s a technique that preserves the soil structure that is otherwise disrupted by tilling or spading. I’m trying it because I’m lazy but the plants are supposed to benefit a lot more using this technique.

dig the soil over with a fork or shovel.
