Is agriculture simply a case of sticking a seed in the ground or is there more to it? Is there any formal training required? I’m considering a career change.

For small scale ‘gardening’, yeah it’s pretty simple. Just be aware of the season.
For agriculture and mass production. My god.. alot of business/science/geography thinking.
.. avcorse that’s required if you intend to be successful.

pretty well ,plant fertilize and water

If you have to ask, then gardening is not for you.

It is just that someitmes and than again it is not just that.
here are a few site to help you out.
This site can take you in many directionshttp://dmoz.org/Home/Gardening/
This site will take you off in several different directions don’t let their snob speak throw you is basically tells you that for anyone who has done it gardening is more than just putting a seed into some dirt. It will give you a newfound respect for the creatures and soil on your garden site
please visit this site as well ashttp://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0712/p25s0…
peters savage garden and the Exploratorium site
if you are consifering this as a career as a food grower you need to learn about >>>cides if you are going to use chemicals (need a license) or learn how to use organic means to control pesty things and grow great plants.
If you are going to be growing feel good plants for sale (nursery/landscape applications)
you may want to delve into the world of growth regulators and greenhousing. Fungicides and fertilizers.
My point, it is not just about sticking a seed in some soil if you are to make a carreer with it, you will need more info, but maybe not loads of classing. Some botany for basic plant boilogy, and maybe some horticulture to familiarize you with some of the variety oiut there and what is most marketable, and possibility a little landscaping so you can be knowledgeable in the area…no one will buy plants from someone who just grows and knows no applications, unless your are just a grower, (which is kind of booring to me)
if you are getting into growing crop fields you still need to know what is best for the plants, to lessen your work, in the long run.
it is a very interesting profession, it does take alot of time, and patience, weather watching, plant manipulation, there is always something new to learn, just let the plants guide you.
