I’ll bet you $100 and a lettuce tree that nobody knows less about gardening than me. Where does a gardening fool get schooled on learning how to tool around in the dirt?

A lot of us started out like you!! Go to gardenweb.net
There is a lot of helpful people who will help you and many time groups from your own state. Groups on soil…and many kind of plants and landscaping also
There is gardening television; and also there are garden clubs, horticultural classes at a local college, or at a library. Many nurseries have seminars in certain types of gardening during the year. Check your local paper for any information on radio stations who may host garden talk shows; etc. And do read books from your library on plants and gardens that interest you.
Join a gardening club.
First of all there’s no such thing as a lettuce tree. The best place to get answers to your questions is to call your local county extension office. They will answer all your questions. Another thing you can do is call a local nursery. They would be glad to help you.You could also try the library.
Call your local university extension office (look in the phone book) and ask about their master gardener program. They have a great training program for those that would like to know the difference between a photina and a petunia. Of course you could also hang around gardening friends–I’ll teach you what ever gardening info you want to know in exhange for a little help weeding the garden!
Most areas have a nursery or two that give classes in landscaping or plant information. Truthfully, most garden types are pretty friendly and willing to chat about their favorite flowers for hours. There should be local plant clubs as well.
Do you have a hokey local fair? Go to the plant and flower department, or a home and garden show, and you will find a whole hidden world of people happy to help you. We might even show you the secret handshake.
Thanks to garden freaks like me that hang out with librarians, most libraries have SHELVES of garden books, so they are a great source of info as well.
Just remember that most people have favorite topics in horticulture. Some love trees, or houseplants, or tropicals, or flowers, or herbs–you will find that very few know everything so don’t get intimidated. I can talk flowers and roses all day, but tropicals would send me to the library.
My husband was pretty uninformed about plants and such until he signed on with me. Now he can id most of my common flowers, and knows not to weed eat the ornamental grasses. Not only that, but it’s cool to impress your friends by knowing which edible flowers you can pick from the garden and toss in a salad.
Have fun!
