We are starting a new garden and wish to keep organic as much as possible. We haven’t found much at our local garden center or large retailers for items such as compost or organic seeds or seedlings. We live in Metuchen, but are willing to travel if there is a store that matches our needs. Thank you.

My father passed away a couple months ago and I want to get my mom something special. She loves to garden and my dad and her use to share that bond. Is there any new great gardening tools or things out there that you recommend?

My garden consists of nice shrubs and moss in-between large stones. The critters seems to like to dig up the moss in search of grubs. I’ve tried chemicals to kill the grubs, but they dig us up nonetheless. I have a trap and catch them and have animial control relocated them, but we live somewhat close to the mountains outside of Los Angeles and there is a steady stream of racoons, skunks and possum.
Has anyone had good luck with fox urine? I’ve tried it and can’t say that it worked well. We’ve also tried cayenne pepper applications, which work for a few days until the sprkinlers soak the garden and the pepper is washed away. Plus, the pepper turns the green moss red.
Thoughts?

I am trying to set up a cottage garden across the back fence. All the seedlings get trampled on and broken by our young dogs as they run and play. The yard is huge and they are only small dogs, so there is plenty of room for them to play elsewhere. Its so frustrating to spend so much money, time, and effort to plant a nice garden only to have it trampled on and torn apart. Yes, I know I could put up fence, but I will have to save enough money for this. Meanwhile, I am working on training them to stay out. During this training and until I get a fence, are there any plants that will deter them from entering the garden? — e.g., things dogs don’t like the smell of, I don’t want to go with cactus or spikey plants that would injure. The “get off my garden” sprays, etc. don’t work and I cannot afford to keep on trying the various brands. Thanks for your help.

Seriously I like gardening. I like growing corns and pomegranates, I like to plant things that can be eaten. Not because I am poor but when I plant things I like stuff that can be eaten.
